Specialised Information Service Education

The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds the Specialised Information Service for Educational Science and Research (FID) which unites five co-operation partners and supports scientists in researching and particularly accessing international literature and other resources relevant for your research – covering printed respectively electronic books and journals and databases.

The FID covers the following thematic fields:

  • Educational science
  • Educational research
  • Subject didactics
  • Higher education research
  • Textbook and educational media research
  • History of education

Research

Integrated search and reference space

The German Education Portal provides an integrated search and reference space thus offering an opportunity to tap comprehensive German and international databases.

Professional mode

For comprehensive and complex search queries, you can use the expanded functionalities of our professionnal mode. Once you have registered successfully, and you will also be offered additional server capacity.

Knowledge graph

Subject to a project funded by the DFG, parts of our data sources will be made available as Linked Data via the knowledge graph for education.


Delivery

Availability of international literature

Monographs that cannot be accessed via distance loan in Germany can be ordered, either via the reference to a title in the German Education Portal or via using the entry form for direct loan. Please note our terms of use.

Digitising on demand

This service allows you to report a wish for digitising a printed, non-copyrighted title from stock held at the BBF | Library for History of Education respectively the Leibniz Institute for Textbooks| Georg Eckert Institute (GEI).

E-books from international publishers

Once you have registered, you will be able to freely access international e-books that are rarely licenced at libraries of science. Please note our terms of use here. You will find further information about this service in our data sources.

Accessing journals and databases via national licences

Using the network of your university library / science institute, you can access journals we have licensed as well as the video database Education in Video and the Australian Education Index. The FID national licences render an important contribution to covering scientists’ research needs. If access is granted, please inform your university library or institute.

Licensing or purchase of foreign journals

You can recommend purchase of foreign journals that are not yet available at a German university via our suggestion form. We will check and if possible approve your suggestion.

Acquisition of source references and licencing of non-European digital textbooks

The BBF | Library for the History of Education at DIPF acquires historical sources for its stock which is only rarely or not at all referenced in German or international digital libraries. It also responds to current researcher needs.

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute's research library is supplementing its services by Licencing and offering non-European digital textbooks.

Clearing house licences for digital educational media

For digital educational media from German publishing houses to be used long-term as sources for research and in university teacher education , the clearing house develops and tests - at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute's research library - licence models for different user scenarios in research and in libraries. If libraries wish to offer educational media from publisher to their users, the clearing house can give advice, and it develops information material.


Open Access

Crowdfunding for e-books

The Specialised Information Service supports the Open Access transformation. – An annual crowdfunding event is organised to contribute to gaining the interest of libraries in sponsoring Open Access e-book packages.

Diamond Open Access journals via crowdfunding

The Specialised Information Service offers to transform journals to Diamond Open Access. Transformation is supported by basic funding from the BMBF and crowdfunding.

Publication platform for journals

The publication platform gives you an opportunity to publish via the software Open Journal System (OJS). We will provide the hosting, support and training for interested publishers. The selected journals are published in cooperation with the Heidelberg University Library.
